Birmingham Hospitality Network - a community response for homeless
families
Birmingham Hospitality Network (BHN) strives to help families in need.
As one of two organizations in Birmingham that serves homeless families
as a unit, BHN is a community non-profit organization with a mission to
rescue homeless families. Not only are food and shelter offered, but BHN
also helps in developing a stable lifestyle.
There are five aspects to Birmingham Hospitality Network:
-
Host Congregations. About
four times a year – for a week at a time; host congregations provide
overnight lodging, meals (supper, breakfast and bag lunch) and
hospitality. Hosting rotates among congregations, which provide
lodging for three to five families from 5:30 pm to 7:00 am the next
morning.
-
Volunteers. Volunteers
cook, serve meals, play with children, help with homework and stay
overnight. They interact with guests, treating them with respect and
responding with compassion.
-
Social Services. BHN
staff thoroughly screens guests and brings families into the
network. Through working with our social worker guests are able to
find housing, jobs and other appropriate social services. Guests are
screened for active substance abuse, psychiatric problems and
domestic abuse.
-
Day Center. Guests use
the local day center from 8 am to 5 pm to shower, care for
pre-school children, and seek employment. Many guests are employed
and go to work during the day. During the school year, children go
to school. The day center provides guests with a mailing address and
a home base from which to conduct their housing search.
-
Transportation. A van
transports guests to and from the day center. BHN also has a utility
trailer that is used to transport the beds to each congregation.
